I hope you all had a restful Mother's Day Weekend and did something special with your family.

In math class, most of you did an excellent job with the special triangle quiz on Friday. You will be getting those back today and need to correct any errors if necessary and have your parents sign them.

We will start with some trigonometric functions today. They sound harder than they are so hang in there.

Good Monday Morning,

I hope you all have a safe and healthy weekend.

We are taking the NWEA tests today in math class. Tomorrow in math class we are restarting new concepts after a break with the toothpick bridge contest. We are looking into special triangles and getting an understanding of square roots of irregular squares. Sounds difficult, but hang in there, it is easier than it sounds.

Happy Wednesday Morning,

Today we test the strength of the toothpick bridges down in the ping pong room as a whole team with GDI. I hope you all are surprised on how well your bridges do. On Friday, we will have the results of all of the other teams as they are breaking their's on Thursday and Friday. We will have a brief 8th assembly and announce the winning bridges.

Also on Friday, GDI is having a celebration for reaching the 500,000 milestone with the PULLTABS. The teachers are supplying pizza for the occasion. Please bring in drinks if you are in Mr Wilkinson /Mr Mitchell rooms- chips if you are in Mrs Littlefield or my room.
We will meet during lunch time and tutorial if needed.

Good Morning,

All eighth graders are working on building bridges out of toothpicks and will be doing so for the next 2 weeks or so. Homework for this time period will be to journalize daily on the work that you do and the work that your company does every day. These entries need to be detailed as this is a great deal of your grade.

Things to include in this entry:
* What I and the company did was...
* What successes I and the company had were...
* What struggles I and the company had were...
* What are the plans for tomorrow for me and the company for tomorrow...
* I need Mrs. Charle McAtee to know...
You may also add any additional thoughts to this daily entry.

3-25-09

Good Wednesday morning,

How is it going for you in math with all the formulas? I have heard a bit from students that working and solving volume formulas is easier than surface area? This is good to hear. For one thing, just working over and over(practice) with formulas, makes the work more automatic, and secondly, I think you are now able to understand the symbols. Anyways, it is great that I am getting this feeling of the concepts surface area and volume of 3-D solids coming along.
Classwork: Review Quiz 2 on page 525

We are reviewing the work on volumes and starting to review for our test that is coming up on Tuesday over Chapter 10. Remember to bring in your own formula sheet to use during the test. Ask any question you may have on this during class, tutorial or before school.

FYI:
* Half student day on Thursday

3-24-09

Good Tuesday Morning,
I hope all is going well using formulas to help solve surface area problems for 3 - D shapes. We have covered surface area formulas for PRISMS, CYLINDERS, PYRAMIDS, and CONES. Surface area is the total outside surface of a polyhedron or solid. Nets are used to represent a solid in 2- D. We compared and contracted the properties of each of the solids, paying close attention to the bases.
After going over the work from last night on surface area of cones and pyramids, we will start to look into more formulas on VOLUMES of each of these shapes. How are surface area and volume alike and different?

Classwork to homework: Page 515-516 #2-26 even # Show all work

We are nearing the end of Chapter 10 and you know what that means- a test coming up on Tuesday. To prepare for it, you may bring in a standard sheet of paper( front and back) to use during the test that is filled with info. I would suggest that you record formulas in a neat and organized manner. You must bring in your own hand copy of this sheet.

Happy Thursday Morning,

I hope you all enjoyed your snow day yesterday.

In math class we will be going over functions and vocabulary associated with this. Range, domain, input, output, x,y, graphing, and function. We will review what makes a function and what a function is not. After reviewing the homework, we will move onto using our laptops to graph the functions we solved. We will move onward to scatter plots and the vocabulary related to those: positive and negative relationships and ordered pairs.

Good Tuesday Morning,

From your comments, I know some of you are anxious about functions. Don't panic yet as they will become a bit more understandable today. We went over a few things about functions yesterday and will review them today to help cement the concepts in. X, domain, and input are the same things, while Y, output and range are also interchangeable. As some of you guessed, this will be leading up to graphing the ordered pairs(x,y) we solved in the homework. We will review last night's homework and continue on with the function rules and tables today. So hang on and keep an open mind in class today.

Homework: Page 543

Today is White Board Tuesday for a review on working with fractions and negative integers and the 4 operations. Anyone still struggling with these, needs to come in during tutorial.

In math class we are moving on with FUNCTIONS. This is a tricky section, but can be fairly fun once you catch the rhythm or patterns. The vocabulary is extensive and you will need to learn them- relation, input, output, function, domain, and range are a few to begin with. We will try to cover these and begin the work today in chapter 11.
